PREPARATION
Before editing I must digitize the clips you would like to use. I can digitize material from mini DV tapes, DVD’s, VHS and Quicktime files. In some cases downloaded files and iTunes can be used.

Coming prepared keeps the cost to a minimum. Have a good idea of what clips you want to use and where they are on your DVD’s and tapes. For example write down the time code numbers where each scene starts so we can find them quickly and easily. When using a VHS, put the tape in your machine and zero the counter, then write down the numbers where your desired scenes start. If, for example, you acted in a feature film and there are multiple scenes that you could use, write down the time code at the start of each potential scene.

You may feel that you want another pair of eyes to watch your material and help choose the best performances and production values. I excel at this. Part of an editor’s job is to recognize the images that, when strung together, create a great performance.

Sometimes it is helpful and essential for me to watch more of your material because I have lots of experience spotting moments that, while not being worthy of a whole scene, are perfect for transitions or short montages that can show a certain look or talent quickly while keeping the reel moving.

Note that if you have a broad range and a lot of material, many casting directors suggest that you have two shorter reels each highlighting certain aspects of your talent. For example, a “bad guy” reel and a “comic” or “commercial” reel.

If you have questions about a scene or an image, write down the time code. Many times I can re-cut a scene to improve and highlight your performance.

Music is not always necessary for a reel, but it is better to come in with four or five options. Well known or popular music is not recommended. The music from a film or project that you did is often a good choice. Think about the question you might hear from an agent, “how do you see yourself getting cast?” And then choose music that supports your answer. home about/info web services filming/production sample reels Recession rates!
